The best time for us to teach leadership skills is when our children are young. This can be done through a variety of different activities. Teaching these skills early on is critical. They will help our children improve their self-esteem and as they get older (especially during those dreaded teenage years) they will be less likely to give in to peer pressure as they will not rely the approval of others. These leadership skills will also be invaluable later in life as well.
Teaching leadership activities is easy to do and can be implemented in our day-to-day schedule naturally. Here are a few suggestions:
Communication Skills
One of the best ways to teach our children leadership skills is to teach our child how to communicate well. Good leaders are good communicators. If you look back throughout history, you will see that this rang true time and again with many of the leaders who had changed our world.
It is also important to remember that both writing and speaking skills need to be addressed.
Reading skills are also very important. The better readers our children become - the better writers they will be. Reading also increases their vocabulary which will help them become better writers and speakers as well.
Let your child read a variety of materials - both short stories and poetry are excellent. If they aren’t quite old enough yet, then we can certainly read to them.
Another exercise to help with communication is to blindfold your child and have him or her try to describe to you an object or how to get to a certain place or item in your home. This will help build communication skills as they have to recall images and details from their minds.
Learning How to Plan and Organise
Being able to plan and organise is also another important leadership skill. To help your child build planning and organisational skills, let them help you plan and organise something - even if it is just dinner or a small party. The more a child learns to plan and organise, the more his or her self-esteem will increase. By the time they are adults, planning activities will just be second nature.
Make sure this is fun and laid-back experience for them. This is also a great time for them to use their imagination and come up with new themes and creative decorations.
Teaching How to Work as a Team
Knowing how to work as a team is another important skill. To help your child learn this, enrol your child in something that requires teamwork. Team sports are excellent for this. Not only do they teach teamwork but they also teach perseverance as well.
Working as a team also teaches our children that every contribution is important for a team to function properly. It will also teach your child how to solve problems and enhance their coordination. These are skills they will use throughout their lives.
These are just a few activities that can be implemented in a child’s life to teach and enhance their leadership skills. Keep in mind that children will learn these skills at different pace depending on their personalities. It is okay if one child takes longer than another - as long as we continue to work with them, they too will eventually gain the leadership skills they need as well.
